Millennials, also known as Generation Y, include the most studied and common generation of the modern day. This term is used to refer to the young people born between 1977 and 1995. Unlike their predecessors (Generation X), this group has automatically fit the technological advancement of the world. For example, Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks have quickly become an integral part of their life. By using these platforms, the representatives of this generation share most of their thoughts, expressions, and other concepts, thus bringing about significant transitions to their homes, workplaces, churches, and schools. In fact, almost every activity of a millennial is digitally performed.
It is, therefore, true that Generation Y representatives have grown in a digital era – something that comes automatically easy to them. Almost all the millennials use smartphones and other mobile devices that allow them to access social media, their favorite place of communication. Digital platforms have enabled them to exchange their thoughts and ideas in an easy and fast way. This sharing has been the basis of innovation and creation of efficient problem-solving techniques in the current world.
As a millennial, the best social media interaction platforms that have influenced my day-to-day life are Facebook and WhatsApp. I interact with most of my friends through Facebook posts, comments, and messages. As a result, this type of communication has reduced our face-to-face interaction, because whatever is needed for anyone of us is right there on Facebook wall or in messages. When I see a photo of my best friend on Facebook, it gives me the satisfaction that I would have obtained if we had met with that person in a real life. Hence, I no longer miss their presence and vice versa, so the physical interaction among us reduces.
It should also be mentioned that digital interactions have shown have both negative and positive impact on businesses. For instance, a millennial will need a WhatsApp application on his/her phone to send a document to colleagues or any other intended person. From the business point of view and during the era of Generation X, these documents could be sent to their recipients by paid delivery services. However, the delivery services businesses are not profitable nowadays because of these new sharing platforms. In addition, millennials take a large percentage of the current workforce market. They include all those people, who have just completed their studies and are ready to enter the job market. Therefore, as the Generation X representatives are retiring, millennials enter the job industry, implying that in the end, they will dominate the workforce.
One more feature of millennials is that they are more independent as compared to the generation before them. With the help of the vast technological advancement in their era, they can develop innovations to help them achieve their own goals and become independent, which is good in terms of business. At the same time, most of them question the norms in their society and always need proof to believe in anything. According to millennials, trusting is difficult, which is why they rarely trust anyone. In turn, most of them are often not trusted in social groups, politics, and religion, as they are believed to be taking advantage of technology to cheat those who do not understand it to own their resources or hack them.
Another negative effect of the discussed tendency is that millennial employees do not have the same loyalty to their employers as the Baby Boomers generation. Notably, millennials like freedom, and they always try to find a way of doing things fast so that they can get enough free time. In this process, they are likely to fail to be loyal to their employers. In fact, most millennials in the workforce have their WhatsApp groups, in which they exchange thoughts about their bosses. Generation Y representatives have that sense of freedom of expression and speech in any social platform, unlike those of Generation X, who remain loyal to their employers due to their fixed mind that they may not easily find a job if they leave their current one.
Despite all the negative talks about the millennials, they form a group of people with the greatest potential of bringing changes to economy, workplaces, and schools at present. They are capable of using the technology to enhance innovations and facilitate problem-solving. This generation can be said to be the best one due to its independence and creativity. However, they can be hard to trust and often lack loyalty towards them.
